This would have to me my favourite Christmas Song for this new generation. I have so many Christmas hymns, it is hard to choose, but I will have at least 3 BLOGS that I have put together about the "miracle of our Saviour's birth", so I will share more of my favorites.
1) TRAVELLING TO BETHLEHEM - Luke 2:1-5
Let's start with Mary and Joseph's trip to Bethlem! Unlike Mary, Joseph didn't receive his angelic visit till later. He was looking forward to marrying Mary, settling down to a dream for their furure. Mary and Joseph were a young couple from Nazareth, who had recently exchanged their marriage vows, and Mary was due to give birth to her baby.
Luke tells us about the Census from the Roman Emporer. As they were from a Jewish family, they needed to travel to Bethlehem for the Census.
"At that time a Roman Emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire.....All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for the Census. Because Joseph was a descendent of King David, , he had to go to Bethlehem in Judah, David's ancient home. He travelled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee." Luke 2:1, 3&4 (NLT)
"Christ was born in a little town of Bethlehem, without much ado, except the angels singing. God too, meets with us in ordinary places. Philip Brooks wrote this song for children, during a Christmas play, in 1867. He had recently mad a trip to the Holy Land, and this was an inspired memory.....We are grateful that we are never alone, but Jesus is always meeting with us with the mundane of life." Sara Perry
"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel." Isaiah 7:14 (NIV)
2. MARY GIVES BIRTH TO JESUS - Luke 2:6&7
I used to love Christmas, going to Church for the Christmas story. My sister Mary was always in the Christmas Play, and guess who she was. Sometimes I played Innkeeper or shepherd. My little sister was an angel!
My favourite part was when I showed Mary and Joseph to the barn, for as you know, "there was no room in the Inn". I loved watching Mary holding the baby Jesus. Even as a child, I loved Jesus! I somehow knew, even then, that He was someone special!
"While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born. She gave birth to her first born son. She wrapped Him snugly in strips of cloth and laid Him in a manger, because there was no lodging a available for them." Luke 2:6&7 (NLT)
"But when the set time had fully come, GOD SENT HIS SON, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship." Galatians 4:4&5 (NIV)
CHRIST'S BIRTH is only the beginning of this story, the first part of this miracle. Let us continue with the CELEBRATION of the theses HUMBLE beginnings.
