10. JESUS HEALS A SICK BOY
Mark 9:14-29
"Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of his speech. Whenever it siezes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashed his teeth annd becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not."
"You unbelieving generation", Jesus replied, "how long shall say with you?" How long shall I say with you. Bring the boy to me." Mark 9:17-19 (NIV)
Jesus was frustrated not only with the unbelief of the father, but also the disciples. The father did recognize his weakness and his need to TRUST and BELIEVE. The disciples were also concerned about their lack of confidence. Jesus told them, they needed to "tap into God's power" and to spend more time in their "prayer" and fasting, a relationship with His Father. This too is something we need to do!
"Jesus said to the father: "If you can! All things are possible for the one who BELIEVES."
Immediately, the father cried out, "I DO BELIEVE! HELP ME BELIEVE MORE!"
When Jesus saw the crowd was quickly gathering, He ordered the evil spirit saying, "You spirit that makes people unable to hear or speak, I commanded you to come out of this boy and never enter him again."
The evil spirit screamed and caused the boy to fall to the ground again. Then the spirit came out. The boy looked as if he were dead, and many people said, "He is dead"!" But Jesus took hold of the boy's hand and helped him stand up". Mark 9:23-27 (NCV)
11. JESUS HEALS THE OFFICER'S SERVANT
Read Matthew 7, Luke 7:1-10
There are many who still come to Jesus with great FAITH seeking HEALING. This man was a great official in Capernaum, and he was a man with great authority.
"At this time the highly valued slave of a Roman Officer was sick and near death. The Centurian heard about Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to Him, as if He would come and heal his servant." Luke 7:2&3 (NIV)
This Centurian had heard about Jesus' signs and wonders. This Jewish elders had great trust in this Centurian who had helped them build their synagogue. He was worthy of "Jesus help" because he "loved God's people".
Jesus went with these Jewish elders, for this Centurian was not only a man of FAITH, but also man of AUTHORITY. He knew that Jesus too was a man of AUTHORITY , and that people would FOLLOW HIS WILL.
"Lord, don't trouble yourself, because I am not worthy to have You come into my house. That is why I did not come myself. But you only need to command it and my servant will be healed." Luke 7:6&7 (NIV)
"When Jesus heard this, He was amazed and turned to the crowd: "I tell you, this is the greatest FAITH I have found anywhere, even in Israel." Luke 7:9 (NIV)
The Centurian's servant was healed! In Capernaum, Jesus demonstrated His healing power over sickness!
12. JESUS HEALS A MAN AT A POOL
Read John 5:1-18
"When Jesus saw Him lying there and thew that he had already been in that condition a long time, He said to him, "Do you want to be made well?" John 5:6 (NKJV)
"There are many hurting in society - the poor, the sick, the homeless. There are people with inner wounds - their grieving, the lonely, thhe depressed. All too often, they are forgotten and invisible! Think about the people in the sphere of your influence. How can you help them or give them support?" Max Lucado
Throughout the year people would gather in Jerusalemn for their major feasts. Some came on "healing pilgramages", expecting to be healed of the ailments. Many would sit by the Pool of Bethsaida, waiting for an angel to stir the waters. One man had spent years near this pool, waiting for someone to help him get into the pool. Jesus took time out to speak to this man!
"Sir", the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me."
"Then Jesus said to him: "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and was cured." John 5:7&8 (NIV)
Can you imagine Jesus walking among the sick? Surely there must have been a more enjoyable activity. After all, this was the Passoover - an exciting time in Jerusalem. People had come from miles around to hear Him in the Temple, yet here, He was taking time for His HEALING MINISTRY.
"Little do they know that JESUS IS WITH THE SICK. Little do they know that He is walking slowly between the BEGGARS, the BLIND and PARALYZED. Little did they know that this strong, young carpenter is surveying the rugged landscape of PAIN." Max Lucado
Just as Jesus visit places of PAIN, we too can visit these places - nursing homes, prisons, hospitals, disaster areas, shelters - where we can be of help in some way. We may no know how, but we will never know unless we TRY!
"Forgive us father, if we have ignored the needs of others. Help us to respond to the suffering around us. Fill us with you love. Give us your compassion for hurting people, your love for the despised and your mercy for the afflicted." Max Lucado
